An old-fashioned lo-fi village fete that’s all about books. We will be launching the first festival vintage clothes and book swap to encourage a greener approach to reading and living. Bring along your unworn and nearly new clothes and accessories, clean books, kids’ books, DVDs, CDs and magazines from 9am-12pm on Saturday then come back from 12pm and swap them!

During the day you will also be able to participate in free writing workshops with Mslexia magazine and Kate Fox, make your own books with Chloe and Chris Morton, learn how to start a book group, make your own comics and strips, and learn to knit book bags from recycled materials.

Authors appearing include Peter Mortimer, Tony Horne, Charles Fernyhough, Sheila Binks, Pru Kitching and Valerie Laws and Nik Jones from the Read Regional campaign. Victoria Moore will be demonstrating how to make seasonal drinks and Catherine Blyth will be leading a workshop on How to Talk to Strangers.

You can also take part in the Durham Board Game Tournament and play Boggle and Scrabble against fellow book-heads and wordsmiths.

Please note that you will need to register in advance to take part in some workshops. For event timings and to see the rules of the swap, please check the festival website at www.bookfestival.org.uk.

Great news – Lumiere, the magical festival of light which many of you enjoyed last November was a winner at Tuesday’s Journal Culture Awards. And ...
