By Alan Bennett. A Gala Theatre Production in association with Richard Jordan Productions Ltd
The incredible true story of the unlikely relationship which forms between the writer and an eccentric bag-lady who comes to live in his garden. Miss Shepherd was an eccentric old lady living in a battered van in the street near Alan Bennett’s home in Camden Town. After a series of attacks on her van, he suggested she move, with her van, to his front garden. She stayed there for fifteen years.
It’s the story of Bennett’s frustrating and hilarious encounters with neighbours, doctors, the social services and the indomitable Miss Shepherd herself. The funny, poignant and truly original tale of how a respectable, intellectual, mild-mannered English gentleman tolerated a bag-lady and her clapped-out van, as their proximity makes them very much a part of one another's lives. Directed by Simon Stallworthy.
The Lady in the Van stars Rosalind Bailey (Get Off at Gateshead) as Miss Shepherd, Hugh Osborne and David Hedges as Alan Bennett; plus Arabella Arnott, Pat Dunn and John Carter.
