This talk will concentrate on the events that occurred on the Greek Island of Kos (Cos) in October 1943, which was the basis for the Colonel's recently published book: "Kos, A Forgotten Tragedy".
When Italy capitulated in September 1943, German Forces in the Balkans moved to take over areas that had previously been held by their former allies. At the same time, under Churchill's instigation, the Allies tried to occupy the Dodecanese Islands, with an eye to using them as a base to attack German positions in the Balkans and at the same time pressurising Turkey to enter the war on the side of the Allies.
Thus the drama began for the 1st Battalion, Durham Light Infantry and a company of men from 11th Battalion Parachute Regiment, which would result in defeat and imprisonment for them and a worse fate for the officers of their new-found allies, the Italians
