High House Chapel is now the oldest Methodist chapel in the world in continuous weekly use since its foundation in 1760 and is one of only 4 chapels listed by Simon Jenkins in his book 'England's Thousand Best Churches', 1999.
Wesley preached here 13 times and the small folk museum next door includes a dedicated Wesley room, an 1870 period Weardale cottage room, local history displays and a superb collection of local crystallised minerals. The museum offers a genealogy search facility for visitors looking for ancestors in Stanhope Parish. The museum is the home of 'The Weardale Tapestry', a 16ft free style embroidery depicting the history of Weardale from prehistoric times to the present day.
