Sweet Secrets in the Dales

Sweet Secrets in the Dales
Added: 01/08/2012

There's something sneaky going on in the Durham Dales... Groups of people are gathering every month in Bishop Auckland, Stanhope and other parts of the County for secret meetings and Culture Durham has been on the hunt to find out why. We tracked down the local coordinator for Durham's "Clandestine Cake Club" Charllie Scott King.

Scott King says

"I set up Durham Dales Clandestine Cake Club as I love cake and was jealous of a friend from Cambridge who said she'd just been to an event and got to try 20 slices of cake for free!"

The first event was held on March 11th of this year and had a Romeo and Juliet theme to celebrate the date the Shakespearian pair apparently got married! Since then the club has hosted monthly meetings including a special “18th Century Cake themed event” for the EAT festival.

I ask how you can get involved and find the answer is very simple “all you do is bake a cake, bring a friend or family member and meet us at the secret "pop-up" location. The exact venue won't be disclosed until a week before the event itself” Well, that explains the clandestine bit.

All of the events are free to join, though you may have to buy a drink at the venue which I’m assured is a small price to pay for many, many (many) free slices of cake.

To find out more and stay up to date with all of the secret locations you need to sign up via the official website www.clandestinecakeclub.co.uk or follow @CCCDurhamDales on twitter. Or if you live in the Dales, keep your eyes peeled for posters that go up when the Clandestine Cake Club come to your town!
