Swapping its designer togs for cotton T-shirts, award-winning fashion retailer, Van Mildert is one of a number of businesses showing its support for Durham’s bid to be named the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013.
The retailer’s flagship store on Elvet Bridge, Durham revealed a fitting mark of its support by dressing its window display in T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan, ‘Back the Bid’.
Van Mildert’s store manager, Jane Smith spoke of the boost that the bid will bring to businesses in the county and the region as a whole:
“I think that Durham’s bid for City of Culture, will give people across the UK a glimpse of what Durham and the county has to offer in terms of fashion and culture, which can only bring more business to the region.
“It’s actually quite a haven for fashionistas, we dress the likes of the pet shop boys and the county has so many different types of culture, whatever your interest.
“The whole of the North East needs to get on the website and back this bid, because the entire region including local business stands to benefit from its success.”
Melanie Sensicle, chief executive of Visit County Durham and creative and communications lead for the bid says: “This is a great show of support for the bid and we are grateful to local businesses that are really getting behind the campaign.
“Bidding for City of Culture will provide a lasting legacy including a stronger and more diverse economic base, a vibrant creative industries sector, and improved quality of life for the people of County Durham so I would urge more businesses to show their support by visiting the website to Back the Bid.”
The County’s bid to be the first UK City of Culture in 2013 spearheads an ambitious programme which aims to attract more visitors, generate investment, create jobs, and give the county’s residents better prospects for the future.
The bid will provide benefits for the whole of County Durham and the wider North East region.
