An exhibition giving the public their first taste of what Durham’s City of Culture bid will look like has been hailed a success.

All week, people have been pledging their support by adding their names to a sign up wall. As the shop closed its doors on Saturday 22 August, more than 1000 people had added their names to the sign up wall suppporting Durham's bid.

Marion Ingleby, project manager for the City of Culture bid “We reckon we’ve had about 150 people a day and today we've had over 400 people in which is brilliant.”

The exhibition format has proved popular. The display is hung in Empty Shop, a former record shop transformed into a not-for-profit community interest art gallery by Durham artists Carlo Viglianisi and Nick Maylan.

From infants and teenagers to grans and granddads, there’s been a great mix of people signing up. Marion said: “It’s created a real buzz.  We’ve had some very encouraging feedback. The consensus has been that Durham should really go for it!”

Amongst those signing up during the week were councillors from across the county and County Council Chairman, Cllr Brian Myers
