Added: 26/11/2009

SEDGEFIELD Racecourse is urging people to get behind Durham’s bid to be the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013.

To encourage registrations on behalf of the bid, the 2.20pm race at the County Durham racecourse on Tuesday (24 NOVEMBER) was entitled: “The Durham City Of Culture 2013 Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.”

Durham is up against more than 20 rivals – and the winning bid will be announced next autumn.

Melanie Sensicle, the bid’s communications lead, said: “Horse racing at Sedgefield is part and parcel of the culture of Durham and naming a race after our UK City of Culture bid is a really inspired and fun way of showing the racecourse is backing us. We’re going at full gallop to bring the title to Durham – you can bet on that!”

The racecourse’s sales manager Rachel Divers said: “We want to raise awareness about Durham’s City of Culture 2013 bid and urge people to back it.

We asked members of the public on the day to register their support by signing a postcard or visiting the bid’s website."

Great news – Lumiere, the magical festival of light which many of you enjoyed last November was a winner at Tuesday’s Journal Culture Awards. And ...
