St Laurence Church
Christians have worshipped at St Laurence's Church in Pittington from around 1100AD. The oldest part of the present church is the westernmost part of the nave which dates back to the 12th Century.
In the 19th Century rare 12thC wall paintings, showing scenes from the life of St. Cuthbert, were discovered and it is probable that much of the early Norman church was decorated in the same way.
Christian the Mason, one of Bishop Pudsey's builders, and who is thought to have been responsible for both the Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral and the North arcade of St Laurence Church lived close by. Near the pulpit you will find Christian's grave cover; a massive slab of Frosterley marble.
