Lubetkin Theatre

Lubetkin Theatre

The Lubetkin Theatre, housed at East Durham College's Peterlee campus, is a new 220 seat theatre opened in October 2009. The eagerly anticipated facility is open to both students and the general public and houses state-of-the-art equipment and provides a facility designed to nurture and inspire creativity in a range of 'arts' related disciplines. As well as being used as a teaching and learning area, the Lubetkin Theatre showcases a number of student productions and performances from external companies.

The theatre was named in honour of Berthold Lubetkin a Russian emigre architect who pioneered modernist design in the 1930s. He was commissioned after the war to be the master planner for Peterlee, but saw his ideas flounder because of red tape and opposition.
