Binchester Roman Fort
Binchester Roman Fort includes the excavated remains of part of a large Roman fort, built around AD80 and used for about 350 years. There is a superb military bath house, Britain's best preserved, with system providing under-floor heating and part of Dere Street, the Roman A1.
A small town developed around the fort where the soldiers' families lived. Parts of the site were excavated in the 1870s and again in the 1930s.
