Auckland Castle

Auckland Castle

Auckland Castle was the principal country residence of the Prince Bishops from AD1190, but is now the home to the Bishop of Durham. A fine example of architectural history, the state rooms display many treasures including original works of art. This includes a priceless collection of 17thC Spanish paintings by Francisco de Zurbaran. The UK's finest examples of the Spanish artist's work are 13 larger than life canvasses which depict Jacob and his 12 sons. These were captured by pirates en route to Mexico and sold to the Bishop of Durham for £125. St Peter's Chapel is one of the largest private chapels in Europe. The 13th picture, Benjamin, was bought by the Duke of Ancaster so the Bishop had to commission a copy.
