What makes Durham special?

What makes Durham special?

Durham is a special place. It has a unique mix of spiritual and industrial heritage, outstanding natural landscapes from coast to dales, and, at its heart, sits a picture-perfect capital city.

Here's just some of the things we can celebrate

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Cathedral and Castle. Dating back to 1093, the Cathedral is a centre of Christianity and is one of the world’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture.

Historical variety on display including several important collections at the County’s

Museums - Beamish, The Bowes Museum, Locomotion: National Railway Museum and the award-winning Killhope, The North of England Lead Mining Museum.

Important sporting events and venues including one of the oldest rowing regattas in the country and the Riverside, home to Durham County Cricket Club, a test ground that will host ‘The Ashes’ in 2013.

A strong festival programme which has been considerably enhanced in recent years. This includes Brass: Durham International Festival, Musicon, Durham Book Festival, the award winning 'Enlightenment' and November's spectacular light festival, 'Lumiere' which saw 75,000 people visit Durham over four evenings.

Home to the third oldest university in England. Durham University has an international reputation and a key regional role. Its Oriental Museum and Palace Green Library house collections of national and international importance.
